The River Artists
Between 2010 and 2013 Horizonline Pictures worked on a project documenting the River Arts District in Asheville, North Carolina.
Taking inspiration from The Artist Series by Hillman Curtis, Chris Gallaway built relationships with people working
in the burgeoning cultural center on the banks of the French Broad River where artists had filled the vacant warehouses
of the old industrial block. Over time Chris worked to capture the vision and character of these creators while documenting
their work process. The resulting films capture the River Arts District at a unique moment in time before the influx of
restaurants, breweries, & commercial projects inflated rents, making it increasingly difficult for artists to afford to live
and work in the area. This film series was supported with a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council.
